KAYAKING IN COWICHAN BAY

Today the ocean beckoned, and I answered the call. Cowichan Bay is located just north of Victoria, and it is a stunning location to take to the water.

Cowichan Bay

Today’s adventure was amazing. It had been a long time since I’d been out on the ocean in a kayak, and while Cowichan Bay is protected from the big waves and wind, it is still the ocean.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of saltwater on your lips to someone who has never experienced it. It’s what bliss tastes like.

And the pictures turned out pretty good too!

When I’m on the water, I put my phone in a waterproof pouch with a lanyard to keep it dry and from ending up at the bottom of whichever body of water I’m on, and it isn’t always easy to tell how the pictures are turning out.

Now, a camera phone —at least my camera phone—can’t really do justice to the expansive beauty of this area, it’ll give you just enough of a taste to let you feel the inspiration and know that this is a place you want to go.

Cowichan Bay, known to the locals as ‘Cow Bay’ is along the east coast of Vancouver Island. The Village of Cowichan Bay is charming and gives you access to kayaking, fishing, and whale watching to name just a few activities.

And let’s not forget the stunning views!

Cowichan Bay

There is a nice little dock that is perfect for launching kayaks and canoes. Today I went out in a double kayak with my friend. We paddled out and around the pier, explored the log booms, and then the far shore.

In addition to the gentle up and down of the waves that soothed the soul, there was the invigorating scent of the ocean, stunning views, and wildlife.

We saw a blue heron resting on the logs, seals playing in the waves next to us and sunning themselves on the logs, and standing like sentinels on the top of every pillar were cormorants.

After several hours of paddling, chatting, and just absorbing the atmosphere, I felt like I was revived and ready to take on the rest of this busy week. I was ready to focus on finishing my edits of Ginny’s Crush, West Coast Romance Book 2.

But what inspiration did I gain from today’s adventure?

It isn’t immediately clear. I do have a WIP that is in the outline phase—it doesn’t even have a name yet, but the main characters are Natalie and Karam, and if you’ve read Saving Shelby, then you might remember that Natalie is Ian’s ex. It was her sister who was in the accident that resulted in Ian sealing his heart.

And, while I haven’t planned it yet, I do know there will be at least one scene where Karam takes Natalie kayaking to allow her to return to the wilds she once loved but has avoided since the death of her sister, Charlene.

Also, Saving Shelby does have a canoeing adventure that gets a little dicey, but other than that, I haven’t really incorporated water activities into any of the story lines—which I think is interesting, because the water is my home.

I mean, it isn’t literally my home, I don’t live on the water, but it is where I feel the most at peace.

I do have an idea for a future series that involves a sailing school run by some entrepreneurial, and adventurous women (and the really hot men they end up loving 😉—it is a romance series after all), but it’ll be quite a while before I get to that series.

Unless, of course, I win the lottery and can quit my day job and have someone else parent my kids 🤣.

I’ve got a big adventure coming up soon, so stay tuned.

Happy wandering,
