One of the amazing things about living on Vancouver Island for a water-loving girl like me, is the plethora of options. We’ve got ocean, we’ve got lakes, we’ve got rivers, creeks, and streams. AND we have the Cowichan River, which is PERFECT for a day spent lazing around on a tube.
And today, that’s exactly what we did. My husband, twins, and a good friend joined me—even though the weather was a little on the dodgy side (yes, there was some rain)—and we spent the day floating down the Cowichan River.
The adventure started in the town of Lake Cowichan—located in the Cowichan Valley on Cowichan Lake—where we rented our tubes from The Tube Shack. You can use your own floatie, but we like to rent. The tubes are tougher than the ones you buy at the local store, and they come with a bus ride back to the parking lot.
There are a few places that you can put your tube into the river, but if you rent from The Tube Shack, then there is a private dock just down from the weir in Lake Cowichan. The river meanders along for about 3 kms under a few bridges to Little Beach with deep stretches perfect for swimming and shallower, bumpy sections that are just plain fun.
It’s a family friendly activity with stunning views!
And, there just might be a scene in my upcoming novel—Ginny’s Crush, West Coast Romance Book 2—with some sexy fun on the Cowichan River that may or may not lead to some sexual tension between the main characters in Book 3!
Today’s adventure was a little different from previous years. Tubing on the Cowichan River on a hot Summer’s day is very popular and normally the river is full of tubers. With it being a cloudy day and with COVID 19 precautions in place, we were all alone. It was like having our own private excursion.

According to the shuttle bus driver, the family that went ahead of us resembled popsicles when she picked them up, but we got lucky and the sun came out for a brief visit when we were about 2/3rds of the way down the river. It was bliss!
Another amazing day. I think of got some inspiration for a steamy scene involving the rope swing pictured above…
Today’s lesson is to never let a little rain stop you and wander where you will!
This adventure took place on 2 July 2020!
